EU Deploys Aircraft and Crews to Combat Fires Across Europe

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – As wildfires persist across various regions of the continent, European nations have ramped up collaborative firefighting efforts. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism was activated following requests from Belgium and Spain, overwhelmed by fire incidents straining their national resources. In response, aircraft, helicopters, and ground teams have been mobilized to assist local firefighting crews in both countries. Additionally, authorities have utilized satellite imagery to monitor fire zones and enhance emergency planning across multiple European regions.

EU wildfire support brings aircraft, crews and satellite mapping to affected regions.

Belgium received two rescEU firefighting aircraft supplied by Sweden to support efforts in the Hautes Fagnes area. Germany and Norway each contributed two helicopters, while Dutch aircraft also participated in the firefighting operations. The latest assessments indicate that the fire has scorched over 3,000 hectares. Belgian emergency personnel, military units, farmers, and international crews are all working within the affected zones, with authorities maintaining restrictions on roads and water sources used by responders.

By Monday evening, nearly 500 personnel and over 120 vehicles were engaged in the Belgian firefighting effort. Ground crews focus on accessible regions while aircraft target harder-to-reach parts of the fire. Farmers assist in ensuring water supplies for emergency teams operating near the blaze. Residents of Sourbrodt have been permitted to return home, although access remains restricted for some residents of Küchelscheid due to ongoing fire conditions.

French Teams Reinforce Firefighting Efforts in Spain

To bolster firefighting operations in Aragón, Spain received 104 firefighters and 36 vehicles from France. At the time of European support arrival, nearly 16,000 hectares had been consumed by the fire in the region. Authorities in Aragón issued red alert for 14 fire danger zones on Aug. 18, up from eight the day before. Officials also reported extremely dry fuels across several central and northern zones, intensifying the challenges faced by crews who are already battling active fires and monitoring vulnerable areas.

Satellite mapping support from the Copernicus Emergency Management Service assists response teams across Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. These satellite maps enable emergency managers to assess burned areas and locate active fire zones. The European Commission coordinates international aid through the civil protection system, facilitating the movement of personnel and equipment across borders upon national request.

European Resources Enable Cross-Border Emergency Support

Ahead of the 2026 wildfire season, Europe assembled a joint reserve comprising 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters. Authorities also stationed 777 firefighters from 14 countries in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. This shared system allows governments to seek assistance when their capacities are stretched. Emergency coordinators then match these requests with available aircraft, crews, vehicles, and other resources from participating nations.

The current efforts address multiple separate fire incidents rather than a single cross-border event. Belgium continues to deploy aircraft, helicopters, ground units, and local logistical support in the Hautes Fagnes. Spain has incorporated French firefighters and vehicles into its operations in Aragón. Across the continent, emergency services are leveraging satellite data for continuous monitoring of affected zones. By the end of July, Europe’s burned area reached approximately 2.5 times the typical level for that period of the year.
