Data from regional health reports indicate a sharp increase in cholera cases during 2026. According to the World Health Organization, 90,049 cases have been recorded across 18 countries in the African Region as of June 28, with 1,528 fatalities reported. Nigeria accounts for 26,848 cases and 181 deaths, with 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths in June alone. Borno State makes up more than 95% of Nigeria’s cases, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most affected areas.
Emergency funding boosts outbreak containment efforts
The Central African Republic will benefit from €500,000 of the aid package. These funds will enhance patient care, vaccination campaigns, sanitation projects, and access to safe drinking water. They will also support disease detection, community engagement, and safe burial practices where needed. As of June 28, health data shows 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths. The additional resources will assist local response teams in promptly identifying cases and maintaining treatment services during the outbreak.
Cameroon will receive €100,000 to strengthen efforts in affected areas. The funds will cover additional personnel, medications, treatment units, and oral rehydration points. By June 28, Cameroon reported 108 cases and six deaths. Chad will get €200,000 to improve sanitation, water access, community surveillance, and patient care. Chad’s outbreak accounts for 109 cases and three deaths in the same period. These four allocations together make up the entire €2.3 million emergency package.
Nigeria sees notable rise in June cholera cases
In June, 12 African countries reported a total of 27,954 new cholera cases, marking a 95% increase over May. The region also recorded 284 deaths related to cholera during this month. Nigeria led in new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. The outbreak in Nigeria was particularly intense in Borno State, driven by conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and seasonal rains, which have exacerbated public health challenges in affected communities.
