Britain launches £165 million AI biosecurity drive

LONDON, United Kingdom / EuroWire.IO / – Britain has launched a £165 million National AI Biosecurity Initiative to strengthen its defences against emerging biological threats. The centrepiece is a new AI Biosecurity Lab backed by £100 million in public funding. The lab will apply artificial intelligence to the detection and surveillance of dangerous pathogens. The remaining £65 million will support biological surveillance and the development of medical countermeasures for priority pathogens.

AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said the government wants the lab to become a leading international centre for biosecurity research. He described it as a major new global institution that would protect people from emerging biological threats. Narayan said Britain needs the capabilities to protect its people as AI grows more powerful. That includes staying ahead of threats ranging from cyber attacks to biological risks. The plan was published on October 24.

OpenAI and Anthropic have committed up to £200 million in AI model credits to support the lab’s research. OpenAI will provide £100 million in compute and model credits, plus trusted access to relevant models through its Rosalind Biodefense programme. Anthropic will offer up to £100 million in credits, trusted model access and technical support. The credits can be used to run the companies’ models. Including public money, total backing could reach £300 million.

    Independent non-profit to lead research

The lab will operate as an independent non-profit organisation overseen by a scientific advisory committee. The government said it was designed to attract talent and work with autonomy, in a similar way to the AI Security Institute. Its first priorities are the early detection of biological threats and faster development of vaccines and treatments. Officials described it as the world’s first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation.

Google DeepMind scientists and biosecurity experts will take part in joint research. The company may also offer trusted access to Gemini and specialised science models. Basecamp Research, a London-based AI life sciences company, will provide access to its AI biology models. Public bodies including the UK Health Security Agency, Dstl and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency will work with the lab. The Animal and Plant Health Agency is also involved.

Wider AI package exceeds £600 million

The biosecurity plan is the largest single item in a package of more than £600 million announced before Wednesday’s Budget. The AI Security Institute will receive £120 million to expand testing of advanced models and research into emerging risks. Cyber security will get £130 million, split between a National Cyber Shield and a National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre. The two cyber programmes will receive £60 million and £70 million.

The package also includes £60 million through the Sovereign AI Fund for robotics, autonomous systems and industrial AI. A further £60 million will support research and procurement of domestic AI technology, and £18 million will fund a chip-design academy. Government AI trials this month uncovered 1,352 software vulnerabilities across 548 code repositories. The AI Economics Institute will receive £23 million over three years. Regional mayors will receive £30 million for local AI projects.
