    Austria prepares to launch its inaugural military satellite with BEACONSAT

    VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is progressing with the development of BEACONSAT, its first military satellite and the largest satellite ever built in the country. The satellite is designed to observe interference that impacts global navigation satellite systems from low Earth orbit. Its sensors will specifically target jamming and spoofing activities involving services such as GPS and Galileo. Austria intends to send the approximately 32-kilogram satellite into space on a Falcon 9 rocket in February 2027.

    BEACONSAT set to become Austria’s first military satellite
    BEACONSAT is planned for a February 2027 launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9.

    The mission will identify locations where navigation signals are disrupted and gather data for military and technical purposes. Jamming involves radio interference that weakens or blocks signals essential for precise positioning. Spoofing introduces counterfeit signals, potentially causing navigation systems to determine incorrect positions or times. These types of interference can threaten systems that depend on satellite navigation across aviation, maritime, transportation, and other fields.

    The Austrian Defence Ministry considers BEACONSAT a technological showcase within the country’s growing military space initiative. The satellite will evaluate methods for detecting navigation disruptions from space and collecting intelligence on affected areas. Officials associate the project with Austria’s efforts in satellite navigation, communications, and space-based reconnaissance. In 2023, the ministry adopted a military space strategy outlining development goals that extend through 2035 and beyond.

    Combining Austrian and European expertise in satellite technology

    GATE Space leads the BEACONSAT project, providing the propulsion system, spacecraft structure, and thermal management technology. Originating in 2022 as a TU Wien spin-off, the Austrian firm specializes in spacecraft propulsion solutions. Its propulsion systems have undergone more than 8,000 hot-fire tests in atmospheric and vacuum environments. Additionally, the project received approximately 750,000 euros in Austrian public funding to support technological advancements.

    Other industry partners contribute critical systems for the satellite’s navigation monitoring mission. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies technology designed to detect and analyze interference affecting global navigation satellite systems. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional hardware, including the onboard computer. The European Space Agency also backs the project via its Marketplace program, which enables testing of commercially developed space systems in operational conditions for technology demonstration missions.

    Launching will mark Austria’s first military satellite operation

    BEACONSAT’s focus lies on collecting interference data rather than weapon deployment or offensive functions. The satellite will observe signals from orbit, identifying patterns associated with jamming and spoofing activities. In 2026, project information indicated that Austria’s Defence Ministry contributed approximately 1 million euros. The mission, scheduled for after the deployment in 2027, will initially serve as a research and technology demonstration platform.

    Austria anticipates the February 2027 launch to inaugurate its first military satellite mission. SpaceX will launch BEACONSAT aboard a Falcon 9 as part of the scheduled mission plan. Once in orbit, the satellite will gather data on disruptions affecting satellite navigation services and transmit information for analysis. This initiative provides Austria with an orbital platform dedicated to studying GNSS interference and testing space technologies designed for military and security purposes.
