Despite these impressive installation figures, representatives of trade associations cautioned that ongoing structural bottlenecks continue to threaten long-term growth prospects. Germany, for example, accelerated wind deployment by granting permits for over 9 GW of onshore capacity in the first half of 2026, but permitting volumes declined in several key markets, including France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. Industry leaders emphasize that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could hinder future project timelines, despite the overall positive momentum in wind capacity additions.
WindEurope’s CEO, Tinne Van der Straeten, remarked in a statement accompanying the report that 2026 might set a new record for wind installations. However, she cautioned that maintaining this momentum depends heavily on government decisions regarding permitting policies, auction frameworks, grid infrastructure development, and industrial electrification strategies in the upcoming months. Trade Group Highlights Five Key Policy Directions for EU Leaders
To continue the current growth trajectory, the industry organization outlined five essential policy priorities for European Union authorities and member states. These include simplifying permitting procedures and expanding regional transmission infrastructure. The group also recommends channeling revenues from the Emissions Trading System into industrial electrification projects and establishing a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under current scenarios, European wind capacity is expected to reach 436 GW by 2030, supplying 27% of the EU’s total electricity demand.
National ministries and European regulators plan to review these recommendations during upcoming ministerial meetings before the winter heating season. Official trade portals will continue to track turbine installations and auction results across countries to ensure compliance with the European Union’s decarbonization objectives.
