Ukraine Supports Trump’s Energy Truce as Russia Remains Silent

WASHINGTON, DC / EuroWire / – U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Russia and Ukraine have reached an agreement to cease hostilities against each other’s energy infrastructure. Trump revealed this arrangement on Sunday, asserting it would take effect immediately. He referred to it as an “energy ceasefire” but did not provide detailed conditions. By Monday, Russia had not issued any public statement confirming the deal. Ukraine expressed support for a reciprocal pause and sought additional clarification from Washington.

Ukraine backs Trump energy truce as Russia stays silent
Kyiv says it supports an energy ceasefire if Moscow follows the same restrictions.

Trump shared the news via his Truth Social account, urging both nations to honor the agreement. The White House had not issued a separate document outlining which sites would be protected. No monitoring system or enforcement mechanism was announced. Similarly, the Kremlin had not provided its own confirmation of the ceasefire. This left critical details unresolved as officials discussed how the proposed halt would be implemented at energy facilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Kyiv was ready to cease attacks on Russian energy infrastructure under reciprocal conditions. He welcomed Trump’s announcement but emphasized the need for the commitment to be practically enforced. Zelenskyy indicated Ukraine expected Russia to adhere to the same restrictions. He also mentioned Ukrainian officials were waiting for clearer guidance from the United States. Following the announcement, Kyiv continued consultations with U.S. officials and European allies.

Ukraine reports ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure

Zelenskyy reported that Russian forces kept targeting Ukrainian sites even after Trump announced the energy ceasefire. He highlighted a strike on the CHP-5 combined heat and power plant in Kharkiv. Ukrainian officials confirmed the strike occurred after Trump’s announcement. Zelenskyy also noted continued drone and glide bomb activity across Ukraine. His office reported that Russian forces had launched over 200 attacks on electricity generation and transmission facilities during the past week.

In addition, Ukraine documented 17 strikes on gas and oil facilities during the same period. Earlier on Sunday, Zelenskyy stated Ukraine would cease targeting Russian refineries if Moscow halted attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Trump had urged Kyiv to stop strikes against Russian oil facilities before announcing the recent arrangement. His ceasefire declaration followed a separate U.S.-Russia diesel supply agreement disclosed on Friday. During this period, global fuel markets stayed elevated.

Russia has yet to publicly endorse the deal

Trump issued a similar statement in September, claiming Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking energy infrastructure. Neither government officially confirmed that previous agreement, and hostilities persisted. The latest proposal also concentrates on energy facilities rather than all military actions. Both Russia and Ukraine have continued employing drones and missiles in the ongoing conflict. Energy assets remain targets in their long-range strike campaigns.

As of Monday, Moscow had not publicly confirmed the latest energy ceasefire nor clarified which facilities it considered protected. Ukraine indicated it accepted the principle of a mutual halt and had issued instructions following Trump’s statement. Zelenskyy expressed that Kyiv expected Russia to respect the same restrictions. No joint verification system, enforcement process, or fixed time frame had been established publicly. Consequently, the ceasefire remains contingent on further confirmation and implementation by the involved governments.
