ST. EGYDEN AM STEINFELD, Austria / RankWire.AI / – Authorities responsible for emergency management in Lower Austria issued immediate mandatory evacuation orders on Friday following a swiftly advancing forest fire in the Föhrenwald pine woodland near St. Egyden am Steinfeld. Local officials verified that a significant wildfire threatened St. Egyden as fierce flames encroached within 50 meters of residential areas, prompting the highest emergency response level, Level B4. Civil defense teams prioritized evacuating residents along Bahnstraße and within the Waldstrandsiedlung housing complex.

Regional disaster response agencies collaborated with municipal authorities to evacuate at least 250 residents from the danger zone. Mayor Christa Tisch of St. Egyden stated that emergency crews evacuated six individual houses along Bahnstraße and 50 units across five apartment buildings in the Waldstrandsiedlung district. Those displaced were transported to a temporary shelter at the Saubersdorf volunteer fire station, where humanitarian personnel offered crisis aid and vital supplies.

Over 700 firefighters from 84 fire departments across the districts of Neunkirchen and Wiener Neustadt responded swiftly. Ground units worked alongside specialized aerial firefighting teams, deploying five police helicopters, two private aircraft, and a Black Hawk helicopter supplied by the Austrian Armed Forces. The Austrian Red Cross sent 44 emergency personnel and 21 specialized vehicles to assist with evacuations and support the affected community members.

This incident marks the second destructive fire in the Föhrenwald area within less than two weeks, following an earlier 100-hectare forest fire that required five days to contain. Disaster officials confirmed that the new fire ignited on the opposite side of the forest, with strong winds driving heavy smoke across regional transit routes. Safety agencies issued warnings for drivers to avoid main roads near Neunkirchen to ensure clear access for emergency vehicles.

Klaus Stebal, spokesperson for the Lower Austrian State Fire Department Association, confirmed that crews established a containment zone around the main fire area to prevent further expansion. Firefighters also tackled several smaller fires that spontaneously ignited in nearby towns, including Strelzhof and Netting. Officials emphasized that operational shifts were strictly managed to prevent ground crews from working more than 12 consecutive hours during intense suppression activities.

Preliminary investigations are underway by law enforcement agencies to determine the exact cause of the afternoon fire ignition. Authorities noted that the initial wildfire in the same pine forest was linked to legacy World War II phosphorus ammunition buried underground. While no direct connection has been established between the two events, environmental conditions across Lower Austria remain critically dry, heightening wildfire risks regionally.

Emergency services kept continuous monitoring posts around the Föhrenwald perimeter into Friday evening to safeguard nearby residential neighborhoods. As the wildfire impacts St. Egyden, civil defense officials confirmed that no injuries were reported among residents or first responders during the primary evacuation process. Technical engineers and forestry specialists are expected to continue perimeter stabilization and hot-spot suppression efforts in the coming days.
